“Richard from DeBoss Garage has been developing a diesel electric hybrid prototype retrofit kit for pickup trucks, in partnership with Edison Motors from British Columbia. The project is called the Edison Recharger and it is the very first diesel electric hybrid pickup truck to be built.”

Starting with a 1995 Ram pickup, Richard designed and machined custom brackets, adapters, and electric axle integrations — using 3D scanners, laser cutters, and advanced machining technologies. He partnered locally with TNK Machining in Dunnville to bring components to life, demonstrating how innovation thrives through collaboration.

Dunnville Youth Impact Centre

The Dunnville Youth Impact Centre continues to demonstrate dynamic, hands-on leadership in programs that support youth development, family engagement, and community partnership.

One nomination outlined the breadth of their initiatives:

Through the Broken Spoke Program, the Youth Impact Centre partnered with the Grand Erie District School Board, Haldimand County’s waste management facility, and Dunnville Secondary School to rescue bicycles from the Canborough Transfer Station. Grade 8 students from Mapleview Elementary and Thompson Creek learn to assess and refurbish bikes that are then donated to children and youth in need. The program not only promotes sustainability and skill-building, but also encourages students to enroll locally at Dunnville Secondary School. The initiative has gained such recognition that school leadership has been invited to present it to the entire Grand Erie District School Board.

If you spend any time at community events in Dunnville, chances are you have seen Kim Plante — even if you didn’t realize the full extent of what she contributes.

One nomination captured it beautifully:

“There is rarely an event, charity, or fundraiser I attend where Kim is not present in some way.”

She is often behind the scenes — selling tickets, sweeping floors, preparing fondant for Smile Cookie decorating, setting tables, stuffing envelopes, organizing vendors, cleaning kitchens, offering hugs, and greeting people with her signature warmth.

The Merigold Lifetime Achievement Award is presented in recognition of an enduring legacy of business leadership, community commitment, and the highest standards of service. This prestigious honor celebrates an individual whose dedication, innovation, and unwavering contributions have left an indelible mark on both industry and society. Their lifelong efforts have not only shaped the business landscape but have also enriched the community, inspiring future generations to strive for excellence, integrity, and meaningful impact.

John W. Hart Jr.–  Recipient of the Merigold Lifetime Achievement Award

In January of 2026, Dunnville lost not only a respected business leader, but a steady presence in some of life’s most tender and difficult moments. John was the kind of person you hoped would be there when you needed guidance the most. And for generations of families, he was. Through his leadership at the funeral home, John carried forward a legacy of service with extraordinary dedication. But what set him apart was not only his professionalism — it was his humanity. His commitment to this community was unwavering. He acted with compassion, warmth, and quiet strength, helping families say goodbye to their loved ones with dignity and care. In rooms filled with grief, John brought calm. In moments of uncertainty, he offered reassurance. In times of heartbreak, he provided steadiness. John understood that his work was not simply about arranging services — it was about honouring lives. He treated every family as though they were his own, and every farewell as though it truly mattered — because to him, it did.

Beyond his professional role, John was deeply woven into the fabric of Dunnville. He supported community initiatives, local organizations, and countless causes — often without fanfare or recognition. He believed in showing up. He believed in service. And he believed in Dunnville. It is for these reasons, and with profound respect and gratitude, that the Dunnville Chamber of Commerce has bestowed upon John W. Hart Jr., posthumously, the Merigold Lifetime Achievement Award. This honour is reserved for individuals whose impact on our community is lasting, meaningful, and transformative. There is no one more deserving. While we grieve his passing, we also celebrate a life lived in service to others. John’s legacy will endure not only in the business he led, but in the countless families who felt comforted in their most difficult hours. His kindness echoes in this community. His example challenges us to lead with compassion. His memory reminds us that even in sorrow, there can be grace. To John’s family, we extend our deepest condolences and our sincere thanks for sharing him with all of us. Please know that his life’s work mattered. He mattered.

John W. Hart Jr. leaves behind a legacy of dignity, empathy, and unwavering commitment to Dunnville. And for that, we will always be grateful. May we honour him not only with this award, but by carrying forward the spirit of care and community he embodied so beautifully.

Debi Weaver

Debi Weaver is a retired secondary school teacher, an avid reader—primarily of non-fiction—and a lifelong student of world religions, sacred writings, ancient linguistics, Quantum Physics for Dummies, the humor in human behavior, and seeing the Divine in all creation.

Her passion for travel has taken her to historic, scenic, romantic, mystical, and exotic destinations, though she equally enjoys spending time with family and friends—whether on her travels, at home, or within the community.

An active member of Community of Christ, Debi shares in the pastorate of her Lowbanks congregation, hosts meditation retreats, and offers guest ministry to other congregations and retreats. Her commitment to community is evident through her long-standing role on the Lowbanks Community Centre Board since its inception.

Debi has a deep love of words and wordplay, finding fulfillment as a writer, author, editor, and poet. Known for her sense of humor, she jokingly describes herself as the result of a whimsical experiment involving DNA from her “petri-dish parents,” Tina Fey and the Dalai Lama. From Tina, she claims to have inherited the belief that life is short and precious—meant to be lived with laughter, joy, and spontaneity. From the Dalai Lama, she draws inspiration from the belief that life is eternal and sacred, meant to be lived with compassion, love, and a sense of purpose. While Debi delights in her comedic side, she admits that her children and four of her five grandchildren may not fully endorse her sense of humor.

Proud to be a “Lowbanks lifer,” Debi attributes her love for community to her upbringing in a rural, tight-knit environment where neighbors were treated like family, doors were left unlocked, and shared gardens nourished many families. As her parents often said about their service to the community: “We may not be making a lotta money here, but we sure do a great business.”

With her rich background in education, community service, and creative expression, Debi brings warmth, wisdom, and a deep sense of connection to the Dunnville Business + Community Recognition Awards judging panel.
