Leadership Beyond Years
The Youth Citizen of the Year award recognizes a citizen under the age of 18 who has most significantly impacted the Dunnville community through leadership, service, and positive influence.
Young leaders shape the future long before they enter the workforce. They contribute through initiative, encouragement, participation, and example. This award celebrates youth who step forward — not because they are asked to, but because they care.
This year’s nominees — Judah Zantingh, Ocean Stefflar, Jacklyn Nagel, and Ari Hoiting — reflect the dedication, involvement, and character that give our community confidence in the next generation.
And the 2026 Winner Is…
Jacklyn Nagel
Jacklyn Nagel demonstrates that leadership is not defined by title, but by action.
Described as “an exceptional young person whose character, work ethic, and commitment to service truly sets her apart,” Jacklyn consistently shows initiative and reliability in every setting she enters.
As a founding member of the Junior Optimist (JOI) – C.A.V.E. team, she has helped build the group from the ground up. She ensures members feel included, keeps detailed minutes, leads discussions, and supports overall morale — all without holding a formal executive title.
One nomination noted:
“She takes initiative without being asked, often stepping forward to help where help is needed and finding ways to make things better for everyone involved.”
Jacklyn has confidently presented at the past two Dunnville Partners In Action (PIA) meetings, clearly outlining the JOI Club’s mandate and activities to more than 70 adults. Her delivery was described as clear, concise, and authoritative — a remarkable accomplishment for someone her age.
Through JOI, she has participated in community initiatives including the Lemon-Aid Fundraiser, Canada Day in the Park, the Optimist Family Day/Winter Carnival, and the Dunnville Santa Parade. She actively promotes Junior Optimism within her peer group, encouraging others to get involved and make a difference.
Beyond community service, Jacklyn is deeply engaged at school. She serves on school council, participates in speech contests and choir, plays on the basketball team, assists younger students, and has competed in both Legion and Optimist Oratorical contests. Last year she earned both the French Award and the Perfect Attendance Award — achievements that reflect both academic dedication and perseverance.
As one nomination concluded:
“Jacklyn is an inspiring young role-model for the youth of today.”
Her leadership reflects responsibility, positivity, and genuine care for others — qualities that strengthen Dunnville today and promise a strong future ahead.
