The Buzz Before the Bash

If you listen closely, you can already feel it—the hum of excitement growing in Dunnville as we count down to one of the most anticipated weekends of the year. The 49th Dunnville Mudcat Festival is just one month away, and behind the scenes, our little town is alive with purpose, preparation, and pride.

PIRATE THEMED Parade floats are being imagined, built, and fine-tuned—this year’s new contest categories have sparked a fresh wave of creativity (and a bit of friendly competition) Somewhere in a driveway or garage, beds are being welded with wheels—each one with its own secret plan to become the fastest, most wind-resistant contraption in town. Over at the Strongman arena, volunteers are busy stripping and repainting the newly acquired “Mudcat Car,” while strongmen and strongwomen across the region are training to make their mark.

You can hear music in the air, too. The bands are booked, stages are being mapped out, and local vendors are preparing their wares—some for the very first time. Trophies are being selected. Duck race tickets are being sold. Who will take home the $2,000 prize? Maybe you? Maybe your neighbour?

Meanwhile, the Dunnville Community Theatre is rehearsing a special performance just for the kids. Balloons have been ordered—to be shaped into pirate swords, animals, and any wish a child might have after the parade. Candy is being bought by the case, ready to be handed out with big smiles to kids lining the streets.

The outdoor movie is ready to roll. Shirts, collectible and custom, are being printed. Cars are being buffed, waxed, and detailed, waiting to roll into the show with pride. And all around town, people are asking each other, “Are you going to Mudcat this year?”

Because that’s the magic of this event: it isn’t just a festival. It’s our festival. It belongs to everyone in Dunnville. It’s for the kids waving from curbs during the parade, and riding the ponies and petting the animals. It is for the grandparents watching the fireworks reflect off the Grand River… for those dancing to live music and eating from food trucks… the teens competing at tennis and volleyball, hanging out at the skate park for tips and tricks. For the businesses, service clubs, and volunteers who pour their hearts into making this weekend shine.

We want to take a moment to thank every single sponsor, volunteer, and supporter who has already stepped up—you are the heartbeat of this festival.
